Almost two centuries ago lightning-powered Ceramian ships pierced the skies of Soburin bringing an age of oppression that still mars it. Emperor Hitoshi's Rebellion threw down the foreign rule of the Kengen Occupation a decade ago but an ancient danger has reappeared to push society to the brink of collapse: the Mists of Akuma. This corrupting fog transforms those within it into bloodthirsty adeddo-oni, frenetic monsters that seek only the rending of the flesh. Nobles have retreated to the cities dotting the countryside leaving commoners to face the supernatural haze alone, adding to the undead horde.
 
Only the ruthless survive, yet committing one's heart to hardness only hastens transformation by the mists.
